Don't Forget The 5K
5K 2012Our Ninth Annual Chicagoland 5K is fast approaching. There's something for everyone: a 5K run, a 1-mile walk and our heralded "Dash for Down syndrome" (which, if you haven't seen it, may be the most fun you'll witness all year).

The event takes place on Sunday, June 10 at 8:30 a.m., meaning there's still time to register. Click this link, set up a team and tell your friends and family to join you (or at least offer their support). This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and it's a great time to boot.

We're still soliciting sponsorships for the event as well. If you own a business, work for a business or know someone who owns or works for a business, this is a great marketing opportunity to get their name in front of a highly motivated (and loyal) audience. Download a sponsorship brochure here. Deadline is May 4.

A big thank you to Jenna Bolser, who -- when trying to think of a gift for her mother's birthday -- offered a donation to the Playhouse.

"After searching high and low for something to get her, I realized she probably doesn't need anymore 'stuff,'" Jenna tells us. Instead, knowing her mother (who is "super passionate" about kids with special needs after working as a special ed teacher) would appreciate the gesture, made a monetary donation in her mother's name.

Clearly, mom's passion translated to her daughter who is one of our literacy tutors. We'll be using her donation to help fund our literacy program. We're sure Jenna's mother is just as proud of her as we are.

Dreaming of Midsummer Nights

Having taken on one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies with "Romeo and Juliet" last year, our Teen Drama Class is now focused on one of the Bard's most noted comedies,"A Midsummer Night's Dream." Our teen thespians (and their program leaders and volunteers) have been at it since January, working through  the text, learning about the characters, and auditioning for their favorite roles. And now they're ready to show off at our second annual spring performance.

This year's performance will take place on Saturday, May 19 at the Neo-Futurarium (5153 N. Ashland). Doors open at 4:30, with the one-hour performance starting promptly at 5 p.m. Tickets are free, but we are requesting a $10/person donation to cover program costs. Space is limited (and we expect to sell out), so reserve your seats now by clicking on this link

In advance of the performance, we could use some volunteer assistance. Anyone interested in helping with set construction, painting, costume making and/or volunteering at the event is encouraged to contact us at chicago@gigisplayhouse.org. We also have a number of supplies and materials needed to complete our set design; if you'd be interested in donating materials (or gift cards to help purchases), please contact the Playhouse for more specifics.
Don't Forget: Our Mountain Adventure!
Speaking of summer ... the Dog Days of summer will soon be upon us. Wouldn't you rather spend an August weekend in the cool Rocky Mountains, rather than dreading Lake Michigan humidity?

Come join us on a mountain adventure! We're partnering with the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte, Colo., for a special weekend of hiking, rock climbing, rafting and camping out. Everything will be led by experienced guides (who are trained and will provide adaptive gear when necessary), for an outstanding, outdoor experience for the whole family.

Here are the high-level details:
Dates:  Aug 9-13, 2012
Location:  Crested Butte, CO
Price:  $475 per person (does not include airfare or lodging).

Space is limited. Sign up now!

Raise a glass to Jayme Sohmer, who on March 9, acted as guest bartender at the Nisei Lounge (with tips donated to us). Jayme has a (nearly) 5-year-old niece, Dorothy, with Down syndrome in Cincinnati. "She's just like her father," Jayme says. "She loves music. she goes to St. Rita's school for the deaf and learns sign language."

Jayme chose GiGi's Playhouse as her charitable designee because of the work we do in her local community. The next time Dorothy visits her aunt in the Windy City, we hope they'll stop by.
